Intracranial supply The initial portion of the nerve is supplied by branches of the posterior cerebral artery, the thalamoperforating arteries. At the optic nerve head, the optic nerves are moving to the relatively low pressure space of the retro-orbital region from the much higher intraocular pressure zone. Furthermore, there is a change in the blood supply from the central retinal artery to the ophthalmic and posterior ciliary arteries.
